Album art nostalgia
Unfortunately I was born after the age of the vinyl, but even CDs have become a thing of the past, more like last century. I think it’s been a decade since I last bought one. The new generation doesn’t know what it’s like to save up money to buy the songs you’ve been dying to play in the privacy of your own room. Rushing back from the store you close the door behind your, tear off the plastic wrap (sigh) a moment of awe before the excitement kicks in and you play the disk. The best part, playing the album from beginning to end, is the ceremonial scanning of the album cover to cover. Admiring the art, reading the lyrics, memorizing your favourite songs.
It’s not the same anymore. It’s so accessible, so easy and so disposable. You download a song you’ve heard, or an album, sometimes without a picture or a face. You might even download something you’re not sure you like, but it’s easy to throw it away isn’t it? Just a click of a mouse dumps it in your virtual trash bin. I don’t think anyone threw out their vinyl albums, or CD albums for that matter, unless you’re parents thought you were in-training to be Satan’s adopted child and lead singer.
I have a culturally revolutionizing idea that, may, blow your mind.
The intimate connection between an artist and his fan is lost to the coldness of the torrent. Why not bring back the good ol’ 12” to spice up the album sales?
